He’d brought a lovely bouquet to every encounter during the brief courtship before their marriage, each gathering of flowers a lovely palette of pastels, their scent cloying enough to fill her room. On their wedding day he’d gifted her a horse, a stallion to start her own line. Though their marriage had been a manufactured union of wills and wealth, Luca had never been unhappy with her. It felt wrong to approach her house in Fairmont, more than two centuries later, with empty hands.

His offer, should he be able to make it, was much humbler than the one he’d propositioned her parents with all those years ago. Just him, as he was, dead and bloodthirsty and still in love with her.

The night air had a chill to it, a cold that caressed his skin without seeping into it, for he was just as frigid. Nerves knotted in the pit of his stomach, though his footsteps were sure and even as he made his way up to her door and rapped his knuckles on it. “Giovanna….my god, you’re a vision.”

Giovanna furiously typed emails on her laptop while reclining in bed. The sun had set long ago, and she still worked through piles of paper files brought into her room by Timothy. Potential clients, asset assessors, marks, and her lawyer all demanded attention. Grumbling, she sent off instructions for changes in her will with an angry stab of the enter key.

The key popped off, tumbling into the room.

Every fiber of her being focused on not throwing the expensive tech into a wall. Counting to ten in every language she knew, she stood, stretched and padded down from the second floor to the kitchen where she poured herself a glass of ichor from a tea dispenser in the fridge.

A crackle of static came through a transmitter in her ear.
Uhhhhh, Boss.
"WHAT?!" Giovanna replied, hitting the talk button on her Apple Watch.
Sorry ma'am, there's a vamp on the front porch. Never seen him before.
"Have I not told you already to shoot first!?" She demanded, raging through a fit of terror.
Well, yeah, but he doesn't quite match the description.
Opening her mouth to continue her tirade, she closed it with a snap and whipped her head around in the direction of the front door, curtains of blonde hair followed.
"Eoin?" She asked, surprised.
Not him either. A different voice, not the captain. Hair's not right.
Giovanna could not be upset with these men for doing their jobs. She paid them.
"Someone send me a still from the video feed," she said, hand on her forehead. More static. Murmuring. Her wrist vibrated. She looked down into the very last face she expected to see again.

Luca?

All rage forgotten, she sprinted across tile and hardwood floors to the massive front door. Pulling it open, there he stood, looking much the same as he had 250 years ago.

"This is my bathrobe..." It was all she could get out of her mouth. "Come in, please. Sit." She indicated one of the chairs in the foyer and ushered him inside.

Leaning out the door, she saw the red lights of snipers shuffle around on the garage roof.

"Stand. Down," Giovanna ordered in a furious whisper, shutting the door behind her and leaning against it, a smile plastered to her lips.

The laser sights extinguished.

Luca stepped into a house that rivaled the one they’d shared together in pomp and opulence. He’d never been a particularly vain man but sixteenth century Italy demanded a certain cachet. You were only noble if you believed yourself to be and the way you made other people believe it was through appearance and carriage alone. Giovanna had done well for herself, that much was obvious.

Where there was success, there were those seeking to strip it away. Luca’s eyes lowered to the red dot in the middle of his chest where he supposed a heart still was, if a blackened, rotted version of it. Giovanna barked into her earpiece and the light vanished. Only then did he sit down.

You always were good at making enemies.” He said, admiring her. “You must be good at dealing with them too.” That much was made clear by her mere existence -- nearly three centuries of life required a ruthless sense of self-preservation, regardless of how powerful you are.

Are you quite well?”

Giovanna checked the tie at her waist that secured her robe. Pulling the ends a little tighter, she walked deeper into the foyer to stand above him. Two steps led down to the plush carpet of the front room. Barefoot, scantily clad and still very much in shock, Giovanna slowly padded down to take the seat across from him, crossing her ankles and sitting with a formality she thought forgotten after six decades of slouching behind a desk. Thankfully, her body would never deteriorate from such abuse.

"As I recall, we had that in common," Giovanna said. Silence. She began a petty staring contest. Neither of them needed to blink anymore, but it was a habit that Giovanna perfected over many years. Am I quite well? What a loaded question. How many times had she recounted the series of events over the last few weeks? She could not remember.

"No," she finally said, folding elegant hands in her lap. "Despite appearances." She tossed a few locks of hair back over her shoulder for emphasis.
